A South American species native to riverine habitats along the rivers of southern Brazil to north-eastern Argentina — and regarded by rain lily specialists as one of the finest Zephyranthes in cultivation.
What sets Z. flavissima apart from every other rain lily in this collection is its flowering season. Where most Zephyranthes produce flushes from summer through autumn, flavissima can flower for longer, peaking in late summer after rain. The blooms are a cheerful canary yellow — crocus-like, 5–6 cm, nestled amongst needle-thin, rounded, glossy fresh-green foliage and stays semi-evergreen in warm climates. Being native to riverine habitat, it performs best in moist, slightly acidic soil and appreciates regular watering during the growing season more than some other species.
Rarely sets seed in our garden. Multiplies freely and vigorously via offsets, rapidly forming dense clumps. Likes to be crowded. Its pollen can be used in crosses with other Zephyranthes. Excellent for pots, rockeries, borders, and garden beds in full sun to part shade.
