A hybrid between two exceptional parents: 'El Cielo' — a rain lily species collected at 4,000 feet elevation in the cloud forests of Mexico, closely related to Z. lindleyana — and 'Big Dude', a large-flowered named selection from the La Buffa Rosa Group, originally wild-collected at Sierra Chiquita in the mountains of Tamaulipas, Mexico.
The standout feature is flower size. Blooms reach 9–10 cm across — the largest in our collection and extraordinary for this genus — mostly white with a soft dusting of pink blushing. The broader petal shape is inherited from the 'Big Dude' parent, giving the flowers an unusually full, open appearance. One characteristic worth knowing: like its 'El Cielo' parent, this hybrid closes its flowers at night and reopens each morning.
Flowers well through summer and autumn after rain in full sun to part shade. Multiplies very well via offsets and prefers to be somewhat crowded. Unlike many Zephyranthes hybrids, it sometimes sets seed and its pollen can be used in crosses with other Zephyranthes - we've used it ourselves in several of our OMG breeding lines. Suited to pots, garden beds, and rockeries.
The variety to choose if you want the most dramatic flower in the genus.
