A beautiful, perennial this yarrow produces a delicious mix of berry, raspberry, rose, pink, coral and warm tones with long stems, a gorgeous addition to the cutting garden.
Achillea millefolium 'Summer Berries' produces masses of flat flower heads made up of tiny individual blooms, held above finely divided, fern-like foliage. The stems are wonderful for fresh bouquets & arrangements, and the flower heads also dry beautifully.
A little history
Yarrow has an extraordinary history with people. Its wild ancestors have grown alongside humans for thousands of years, and plant remains including yarrow have been reported among the plant material associated with Neanderthal burials at Shanidar Cave in Iraq, dating back around 60,000 years.
We can't know exactly why those plants were there - they may have had medicinal, practical or ceremonial significance. But it's rather lovely to imagine that flowers and plants may have played a part in a farewell, because the simple act of picking a flower and giving it to someone we love seems almost universal.
And now, thousands of generations later, we can grow this beautiful modern colour mix in our own gardens.
Growing Information
Sowing time: Spring (September-November) or autumn (March-May)
Sowing method: Sow the small seeds on the surface of a good seed-raising mix and gently press them into the surface rather than covering them deeply. Light can help with germination.
Germination: Keep the seed-raising mix consistently moist but not waterlogged and place somewhere bright. Germination takes around 14-21 days at 18-24°C, so don't give up too quickly.
Position: Once established, plants appreciate a sunny position and well-drained soil.
Spacing: 20-30cm in cutting garden rows, up to 45-60cm in the open garden where it will spread
Notes: Yarrow is a hardy perennial that can be grown from seed. Yarrow is drought tolerant once established and can produce flowering stems over a long period. The flowers attract bees, butterflies and other beneficial insects.
Use: Cut flower: Harvest stems when the flower heads are well formed. For drying: Cut when the flower heads are fully developed and allow them to dry naturally in a warm, well-ventilated place.
