A beautiful Australian native short-lived perennial everlasting with crisp white papery flowers, golden centres and wonderfully distinctive winged stems.

Winged Everlasting is a lovely Australian native, growing naturally in New South Wales, Victoria and south-east Queensland, and naturalised in South Australia, the ACT and Tasmania. It has a local connection for us here on Tamborine Mountain too, where a specimen was collected in 1979 and is held by the Queensland Herbarium. It's always special to grow a cut flower that belongs naturally to the Australian landscape around us.

The species has a fascinating botanical history too. Botanist Robert Brown first recorded it growing abundantly near Port Hunter in New South Wales as early as 1804, during his early botanical work in Australia.

Even the botanical name tells part of its story. Ammobium comes from Greek words meaning sand and life, while alatum means winged, referring to the unusual wing-like edges along the stems.

We've found Winged Everlasting particularly useful as a cut flower because it produces wonderfully long stems and flowers over a long season. Here we have flowers from late winter, and for most growers it will be spring through to autumn. The clean white flowers and golden centres work beautifully with almost any colour palette, making it an incredibly useful addition to a cut-flower garden.

I sow mine in autumn and let the plants over winter, where they handle our mild winters and light frosts.

The flowers are beautiful fresh and are especially useful dried, where the papery blooms hold their form beautifully. A wonderful Australian native for the cottage garden, home cutting garden or micro flower farm, one we particularly value and would not be without.

Growing Information

Sowing time: Autumn for flowers from late winter, or spring to early summer. As a short-lived perennial, established plants can continue flowering into following seasons.
Sowing method: Surface sow with a light covering of vermiculite. Light is required for germination.
Germination: Approximately 4-14 days at 15-21°C
Position: Full sun and well-drained soil. Good drainage is particularly important in wet or humid conditions.
Spacing: 20-30 cm
Notes: Handles light frost. In colder, frosty areas it is best treated as an annual, sown in late winter or spring.
Harvest: Pick when the flowers are well developed and the papery bracts have opened. Most of the year we simply cut and place straight into water. However, in extremely hot weather I find a hot-water treatment after harvesting helps remove air from the stems and encourages good water uptake.
