An Our Mountain Garden Selection
Seed grown and selected at Our Mountain Garden
An Our Mountain Garden work in progress — a constantly evolving mix selected from the tallest, healthiest and most interesting plants we grow, developed from multiple Sweet William types of Dianthus barbatus.
At this stage, the mix contains mostly blush and pastel shades with some brighter tones, along with an interesting range of flower sizes — from super sweet miniature flowers, some with softly cupped, rose-like blooms, through to normal-sized flowers. Some blooms open darker and fade, giving a beautiful two-toned effect. Flowers appear in both the standard rounded heads and larger, flatter plate forms that help fill out bouquets beautifully, all on long, usable stems.
This mix is still developing each year as I continue selecting with soft whites, blush pinks and pastel blended tones in mind, along with a preference for larger, flatter flower forms to help fill space and create a fuller impact in the vase. Photos are from some of last year’s plants this seed was saved from.
Lightly scented with that classic clove-like fragrance, Tall William is a lovely early spring addition to bouquets, bringing both structure and softness.
An easy-to-grow, cool-season plant that establishes well when sown in autumn and overwinters to flower in spring. Reliable and rewarding, with a relaxed cottage garden feel.
