Seed grown and collected at Our Mountain Garden.
This celosia mix has been developed over a few years from open-pollinated plants. It began with Pampas Plumes, Texas Plumes, and Supercrest-type mixes, with additional material from Floret-related and Australian grower selections from the same celosia gene pool.
Each season I’ve selected seed from plants that have proven the most useful, healthy, and visually appealing in our bouquets. I was originally saving for separate lines, but found I didn’t enjoy using beds of only one colour, so I’ve brought them together into one mixed planting, as they all share similar roots.
The result is a naturally variable mix of plumes, wheat forms, and crested types in soft, muted vintage tones through to brighter shades — including greens, blush, pinks, orangey golds, soft and darker purples, and occasional brighter flowers. See photos for examples. I’ve even had some variegated leaf patterns appear in the purple wheat lines
This is a tall, cut-flower type mix (not the dwarf bedding celosia), and is especially suited to cut flower growing and home cutting gardens, where a single planting can provide multiple colour palettes for bouquet work and a bit of variety in outcomes. It also performs well in succession plantings, where one mixed sowing can be repeated through the warm season.
