A timeless heirloom favourite and a wonderful long-term addition to the home garden.
Mary Washington produces tender green asparagus spears with a delicious, classic flavour. Asparagus is a perennial crop, so although it takes a little patience to establish, a well-cared-for bed can reward you with fresh spears for many years.
And there's another reason we love growing asparagus here at Our Mountain Garden - once the spears have finished, the beautiful feathery fern makes lovely foliage for bouquets.
50 seeds per packet - grown and saved at Our Mountain Garden, Tamborine Mountain QLD.
Growing Information
Botanical name: Asparagus officinalis
Plant type: Perennial vegetable
Position: Full sun
Soil: Rich, fertile and well-drained
Sowing: Spring through early summer
Harvest: Allow plants to establish before harvesting heavily. Mature plants can produce spears each spring for many years.
Bonus: The soft, feathery foliage can be cut for use as bouquet greenery.
We love plants that earn their place in the garden more than once, and asparagus certainly does. Delicious spears for the kitchen, followed by beautiful fern for the flower garden.
Happy growing,
Carla 🌱
