A traditional Native American heirloom originally grown by the Hidatsa people of the Upper Missouri River Valley in what is now North Dakota, USA. Carefully maintained through generations of Indigenous seed saving, this distinctive dry bean forms part of a rich agricultural heritage developed long before modern commercial breeding. The variety was later introduced to the wider gardening world through Oscar H. Will’s Pioneer Indian Collection of Seeds in 1915, helping preserve an important piece of Indigenous agricultural history for future generations.
Producing attractive red beans, Hidatsa Red remains valued by heirloom gardeners for its history, reliability, and usefulness as a productive dry bean suitable for soups, stews, chili, baked bean-style dishes, and general cooking.
