Seed collected at Our Mountain Garden from ‘Sultan’ x Open Pollinated.
Sultan is one of those dahlias that makes people stop and look twice. The soft pink blooms are generously speckled and streaked with deeper pink markings - and every now and then a petal comes through in a solid, rich colour that adds something extra. Our customers have loved her in bouquets, and we have some beautiful seedlings coming on from last season’s seed that we’re watching closely.
Sultan is a small decorative dahlia - fully double, rounded blooms in the classic decorative form. The speckled and streaked colouring is a naturally occurring variegated characteristic - no two blooms are quite identical, which is part of what makes her so appealing to work with.
Growing Information
Sowing time: Seeds need warmth to germinate - soil temperature of at least 18°C, ideally 20-25°C.
Starting method: Sow into seed raising mix in small pots or trays, covering seeds lightly with about 5mm of mix. The paper towel method also works well - place seeds between damp paper towels in a warm spot (20-25°C), check daily, and pot up as soon as you see a root emerge. Once sprouted, keep seedlings in good light to avoid leggy growth.
Germination: Typically 7-14 days at 18-25°C. Cooler conditions will slow germination considerably.
Planting out: Plant seedlings out once overnight temperatures are reliably above 10°C and all risk of frost has passed.
Position: Full sun
