All seeds are naturally bee-pollinated, which means every seed is genetically unique. Dahlias are complex polyploids with an enormous genetic pool, so seedlings can inherit a wide range of traits and combinations from generations past. Future seedlings may not resemble the parent plant - these are sold as open-pollinated seeds, not named true-to-type varieties. (Tubers are the way to grow the same variety again.)

I grow decorative, ball, and pompon type dahlias - the forms most useful for cutting and bouquet work. I do not grow singles, cactus, collarette, orchid, waterlily, giant, or novelty types.

I made a point of managing who was contributing pollen. By the time seed was setting, I had already cut back my keeper first-year seedlings and removed named varieties I didn't want contributing, leaving only plants I was happy to have contributing to the mix. The possible pollen parents are listed further below.

Because these are open-pollinated seeds, no two seedlings will be exactly the same. Expect variation in colour, size, form, and plant habit - and that is very much the point. Growing dahlias from seed is a genuine treasure hunt. Every morning you're out early to see what has opened.

If you find a seedling you love, you can name it, save the tuber, grow it on, or share it with others. The blooms came through in gorgeous dusty apricot tones with a distinctive mauve-purple centre that gives the flowers incredible depth and character. It flowers in flushes but never really seems to stop, producing cutting stems right through the season. The stems are strong, the plants are productive, and it's one of those rare bridging flowers that helps tie an arrangement together, sitting comfortably alongside pinks, peaches, apricots, purples and deeper autumn tones. Breannon has become a staple variety for us on the farm, and we're especially excited because it has already produced some very promising seedlings from previous years' seed.

Breannon is an Australian decorative dahlia bred by Jenny Parish of Country Dahlias in Victoria. The blooms are typically described as dusty apricot to peach with soft golden undertones and a distinctive mauve-purple centre. Highly regarded by flower farmers and florists alike, Breannon is known for its prolific flowering habit, excellent stem length and long season of production. The beautifully formed blooms are carried on strong stems that make them ideal for cutting, while the unique blend of apricot, peach, pink and mauve tones allows them to work effortlessly across a wide range of bouquet palettes. It's easy to see why Breannon has become one of Australia's most sought-after cut flower dahlias.

Growing Information

Sowing time: Seeds need warmth to germinate - soil temperature of at least 18°C, ideally 20-25°C.

Starting method: Sow into seed raising mix in small pots or trays, covering seeds lightly with about 5mm of mix.
